Nuclear Medicine Hepatobiliary Scan 核醫肝膽道掃描

2016-11-06
Based on a clinical evaluation, your doctor may recommend a nuclear medicine hepatobiliary (liver and bile duct) scan to confirm a suspected disorder of the biliary system. We hope this introductory brochure will help you understand this scan better.

The purpose of the nuclear medicine hepatobiliary scan is:
  1. to evaluate acute inflammation of the gall bladder;
  2. to evaluate suspected chronic diseases of the biliary tract;
  3. to evaluate obstruction of the common bile duct;
  4. to evaluate bile leakage;
  5. to evaluate congenital bile duct anomalies like biliary atresia;
  6. to provide functional analysis of the hepatobiliary system.

Procedure for the scan
  1. You should fast for at least four hours, less than 24 hours, before the scan. Infants with suspected biliary atresia may need to take oral medicine to facilitate bile excretion several days before the scan (as recommended by the pediatrician).
  2. At the time of your scan, go directly to the scanning room. We will scan your liver and entire abdomen at 5th, 15th, 30th, 45th, 60th and 240th minutes after injecting the tracer. If needed, delayed imaging may be done 24 hours later.
  3. Patients in need of functional analysis of the hepatobiliary system will be imaged immediately after injecting dynamic and they have to stay imaged for 60 minutes until our technician is able to visualize the tracer activity in gall bladder or intestine.

Things to keep in mind
  1. Please notify our medical staff if you are pregnant; if so, the procedure is inappropriate for your condition.
  2. Avoid food intake during the study, except for infants with suspected biliary atresia. Remain still during the scan. This will improve the quality of the image. There are no other precautions and complications like allergy are rare.
