Introduction:

Fever is primarily an infectious ailment caused by inflammations like respiratory infection, urinary infection, and meningitis. Doctors have to locate the truth cause for the fever and treat it accordingly. If the patient’s body temperature is unstable meaning that the patient has not healed. When a patient’s body immune mechanism attempts to neutralize threats like bacteria or virus, temporary body temperature elevates because of the thermoregulatory system. Fever, a commonly encountered symptom within children, is parents’ worst nightmare and the following information includes a series of brief introduction regarding children’s fever:

Definition for fever: 

When body temperature rises over certain Celsius or Fahrenheit degree, such a condition is often deemed fever; and we provide the following guidelines for all parents: 

  • When you use anus (rectum/rectal) and ear (otic) measurement, 38.0 °C (equivalent of 100.4 °F ) is fever.  
  • When you use mouth (oral) measurement, 37.8 °C (equivalent of 100.04 °F) is considered fever.  
  • When you use arm (axillary) measurement, 37.5 °C (equivalent of 99.5 °F) is fever.  
Combined complications of children fever: 

Besides rising temperature, children might suffer from: 

  1. Decreasing appetite
  2. Lethargy
  3. Sleepiness
  4. Irritable crying
  5. Decreasing energy 
  6. Convulsing and a stiffen head
  7. breathing difficulties 
Precise body temperature measurement

If you use electronic thermometer, please follow the instruction manuals.

Ic use alcohol thermometer or mercury thermometer (not recommended), shake the thermometer down to below 35 degree Celsius before taking the temperature.

  1. Axillary measurement: put the thermometer at the axilla, fix the arm, and than hold it for 4-5 minutes.
  2. Oral measurement: not recommended in little child because they may bit through the thermometer
  3. Anal measurement: put the thermometer in the anus, hold it for 4-5 minutes, recommended in young infant
  4. Back measurement: let your child lay down, and put the thermometer under the back, than hold it for 4-5 minutes
Quick management of fever
  1. Encourage your child to rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  2. take off some clothes and keep the air in circulation
  3. take a warm bath
  4. monitor the body temperature
  5. don’t use medication without doctor’s prescription
When to seek for medical care? 

You should call your child's doctor if any of the following conditions presents with fever: 

  • You are unable to control the fever.
  • You have serious concerns over your child’s condition 
  • Your child is weakness or having poor activity
  • Your child has a purple or red rash.
  • A seizure occurs.
  • A change in consciousness occurs.
  • Your child's breathing is shallow, rapid, or difficult.
  • Your child is less than 2 months old.
  • Your child has a headache that does not seen to go away.
  • Your child continues to vomit and unable to eat or drink.
  • Your child has complex medical conditions
  • Your child has been having fever for more than 2 days 
  • Your child has been taking prescribed medications on a chronic basis.
