Pacemaker心臟節律器

WHAT IS PACEMAKER?

A pacemaker is a device, placed in the chest to regulate abnormal heart rhythm, using electrical pulses to prompt heart to beat at a normal rate.  When a patient’s heart beats irregularly, either too fast or too slow, it is highly recommended to insert a pacemaker.

Things to be aware of BEFORE PACEMAKER INSERTION?

Four to six hours prior to the pacemaker insertion, a patient should not intake any food or beverage including water; and he or she should thoroughly clean the chest area. Before the procedure, please turn in the consent form.

Things to be aware of AFTER PACEMAKER INSERTION?

After the procedure, you may drink some water; if there is no severe or unpleasant post operational biliousness, you may start to intake some food. When you are hospitalized, our staff helps clean your wound on a daily basis; do avoid getting your wound wet. Also we provide antibiotics to prevent infection, please follow the instructions given on the prescription. Do inform our staff immediately once you feel rising body temperature, dizziness, breathing difficulty, irregular heartbeat, and sharp chest pain resulted from the wound.

Be aware of the followings matters FOR your DAILY activities: 
  1. Please take the prescribed medicine regularly and do not adjust the dose yourself.
  2. Maintain regular lifestyle with enough and sounded rest. 
  3. Do not compress the wound. Once you notice any bleeding or irregular secretion, breathing difficulty, dizziness, chest pain, fatigue, and continuous hiccups; return to the hospital immediately.
  4. Keep the wound dry at all costs.
  5. Keep a daily diary of the rate of your heartbeat.
  6. In the first 2 months, avoid any heavy lifting or raising your hands over your shoulder.
  7. Do not answer telephone or put a cell phone with the side of chest inserted the pacemaker. 
  8. MRI testing is not allowed but CT scan is all right. 
  9. If you plan to travel with the airplane, do inform the airport security of your pacemaker.
  10. Always carry your pacemaker ID with you and inform medical staff regarding any further medical treatment.
  11. You may use household appliances such as remote controls, but keep away from microwave ovens. 
  12. Since pacemaker battery only lasts six to eight years, do return to the hospital for regular check-ups.
