Based on a clinical evaluation, your doctor may recommend nuclear medicine iodine-131 cancer eradication treatment to further treat your thyroid cancer. We hope this introductory brochure will help you understand this treatment better.
The purpose of the nuclear medicine iodine-131 cancer eradication treatment is to eradicate thyroid cancer tissue in patients.

Procedure for the treatment
  • You should be on a low iodine diet and stop using thyroid hormone for at least four weeks before the treatment.
  • If you are prescribed to take doses more than 30 mCi, you will be admitted to the isolation ward designed for radiation protection.
  • Follow instructions given by the pharmacist on how to take iodine-131 capsule or solution.
  • After iodine-131 cancer eradication treatment, our medical staff will assign a whole body scan for you. Remember to return to the hospital as scheduled.
  • After being discharged from the hospital, you may resume your normal diet and start taking thyroid hormone.

Things to keep in mind
  • Notify our medical staff if you are pregnant because it is inappropriate for your condition to have the procedure.
  • If you are breast-feeding your baby, stop it immediately because Iodine-131 may be secreted via breast milk.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Once you are done with the treatment, try not to stay with pregnant women and children for too long; but it will be all right one week after the treatment.
  • There are some common and temporary treatment complications like anorexia, nausea, dizziness, skin itchiness, painful swelling neck, and swelling of the salivary glands. Return to the clinic for symptomatic treatment once you feel any intolerable discomfort. There are rare complications like blood forming dysfunctions; so return to the hospital regularly for follow-up checks.
