2016-11-07
Avoid Compression
  1. Prohibit measuring blood pressure, drawing blood, or receiving intravenous fluid via the arm with vascular access.
  2. Avoid carrying heavy objects with arms of vascular access.
  3. Avoid compressing vascular access like wearing watches, tight-fitting clothing, or decorations on the wrist.
Prevent infection
  1. Clean your arms with vascular access before dialysis.
  2. Avoid scratching your arms with vascular access, which may result in wounds. If there are rashes or swelling on the skin, it must be treated as soon as possible.
  3. Avoid taking a shower immediately after dialysis. If taking a shower is necessary, please keep the puncture site dry.
  4. If the gauze covering the puncture wounds is wet, contaminated or tinged with blood, you must clean the wounds again and change the wet gauze with a new one.
  5. Remove the gauze the next day after the dialysis and keep the puncture site dry.
Signs of obstruction
  1. Absence of pulsation or vibration on the arterio-venous fistula (AVF).
  2. Absence of bruits (by stethoscope) over the arterio-venous fistula or graft (AVG).
  3. Painful and stiff feeling over the access.
  4. Once there are signs of vascular obstruction, please contact dialysis center immediately. We will consult cardiologists or cardiovascular surgeons for further examination and management.
Frequent checks
Easy techniques like palpation of the AVF and checking the vascular sounds by stethoscope help early detection of vascular problems .Please check the access frequently.
